Letter To The Occupy Movement

Dear Occupiers,

Yesterday you heralded your two month anniversary. Never mind that anniversary implies years and not months but I get your excitement. I mean you not only occupy the streets when you make it difficult for me and others to get to work and other places of importance but you occupy our hearts. We all wish we could help you more in your grand struggle against the white man... Wait I mean your struggle against the right wing nut jobs... No I think it was something about that liberal Commie Pinko Bastard they have in the White House... Shit what the fuck is this thing all about anyway?

I know that everyone has their reasons for becoming an occupier and they are proclaiming it loud and proud but what is the movement about? I mean I really want to know. I hate the way our country is working right now and I would love to help the cause if only I knew what it was. I know that you are the 99% and they are the 1% but 99% of what? 99% of Americans because I am pretty sure you represent less then 1% of the population at this point therein defeating the message.

I get that Wall Street was a cause of the economic recession we are currently in and I think it does kind of suck that they got bailed out and yet people still lost their jobs. I don't like the big banks anymore then  the next guy but will my sitting in a park not showering and chanting whatever the yahoo next to me says really get the message across to Bank of America or Chase?

Do you know why your movement is hitting roadblocks at every turn? Can you see the flaws in your arguments? Contradiction is the worst thing for a movement of this kind. Unite and become a real movement. I have said before, and I am saying it again here for emphasis, you need to make a leading body. If Martin Luther King, Jr. had not stood up and brought the Civil Rights Movement together with his pals it would not have been as effective. Otherwise Rosa Parks sitting on that bus and all those fire hoses in Alabama would have been for nothing.

Women's Suffrage wouldn't have gotten as far if the women of the movement hadn't come together and made the decision that they wanted the right to vote in elections and make decisions for themselves. You need to band together. After the pepper spray incident this weekend the news channels went out looking for reactions and statements from occupiers all over the country. They got a mixed bag of contradictions and had more of reports about not knowing what this movement is truly about. They are not doing it because they are owned by the major corporations and don't want to report on it, they do want to report on it and they want to help get the message out there. They just don't have the message yet. Reporters live for a good story and they are not getting anything that helps your movement from your people.

So here are my steps to help you make this a REAL movement and not just some liberal hippies sitting in parks chanting things about having sex with animals.

Step 1: Make a list of demands. In hostage negotiation the first thing the hostage negotiator ants to know is what are the demands. The same goes for any movement. If MLK had been asked what the Civil Rights movement was about and he had said something about people needing to pay off his student loans and that the banks are pooping and peeing on people he never would have been able to get the whole thing off the ground (I do know that MLK was not the only one leading the movement but he helps me make a point).

Step 2: Get your list to your supporters and attach a message about how to communicate with the press when approached. If people can't help you with this then they need to leave because they are the ones harming you. Get the crazy pot smoking hippies away from the fucking cameras and get your smart, well-groomed people out there. You may not want to sink to the level of your oppressors but they will never take you seriously if you have Jeff Spicoli doing all your media.

Step 3: Just because you have freedom of speech and you are protesting doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to get the right permits. You are not an oppressed people, as much as you like to think. The courts have no reason to not give you a permit if you are genuinely going to perform a peaceful protest. If you aren't allowed to march through the streets of Seattle and the cops tell you to move to the sidewalk. DON'T PROVOKE THEM! Cops are trained to protect themselves as well as the public. If you steal their hats, they will retaliate. Don't wave sticks in their faces, they will pepper spray your asses. As well, don't act like you are appalled at the outcome when you knew you would get pepper sprayed (yeah I am talking to you Mr. Gas Mask).

Step 4: Equality is a great thing. I wish we could live in a world where everyone gets a voice and can be heard but guess what. There are 7 billion people in the world and that would take a long time. We have a representational government in America for a reason. Appoint leaders and send them out to spread the word. No movement has gotten past the stage of infancy without proper leadership. Do you think the British Empire just happened because everyone was in agreement? No someone was leading the charge. That leadership may have changed over time but they all had the same goal, take over the fucking world.

Step 5: Rinse and repeat. Keep going back to the drawing board until something works. Add demands, change the wording, appoint new leaders. Hell, if you really wanted to get this shit off the ground you could start a non-profit organization with the soul purpose of getting your message out their and protecting the 99%. It work for the Civil Rights movement (NAACP has been around for over a hundred years and has done a lot of good for this country and it's people, of all races).

I can only give you helpful hints and I hope one of you gets it and implements them. I want to support this movement but I want some structure and consistency before I commit myself and my resources to it.

Sincerely,

One Of The 0%

Friday.
